TitleLetter from Lord John Russell to Queen Victoria
Date24 May 1850
WriterRussell, John, Lord
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionAnswers from the Bishop of Chester and the Dean of Ely satisfactory. Russell asks permission to offer an earldom to Lord Cottenham. Russell says the Cabinet considered the necessity of the resignation of the Lord Chancellor. Russell proposes that the Great Seal be offered to Lord Langdale. If he will not accept unless he is assured that the plan of separating the office of Lord Chancellor into a political and a judicial Chancellor shall be adopted by the Cabinet, Russell proposes to adopt that principle, but sees the difficulty, and will not commit himself to any plan Lord Langdale may frame. If Lord Langdale declines, Russell names Baron Rolfe, and asks Queen Victoria to authorise him to make the offer.
