TitleLetter from Lord John Russell to Queen Victoria
Date10 January 1849
WriterRussell, John, Lord
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionSir George Grey, unwilling to undertake [role of First Lord of the Admiralty, in succession to Lord Auckland], urges Sir James Graham's appointment. Lords Lansdowne and Palmerston approve. Grey thinks Graham would be more likely to accept if offered a peerage. This could be done since two Peerages have become extinct (Lake and Beauvale). Russell suggests the peerage. Russell is considering means for retaining Mr Shuttleworth's services without exposing him to labour which is destructive to life.
