Title
Letter from Lord John Russell to Queen Victoria
Date
5 September 1850
Writer
Russell, John, Lord
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Russell glad to learn that the family of the late King of France will reside in England. He adds that the reflection naturally occurs, that if Napoleon and Louis Philippe were unable to consolidate a dynasty , who will ever be able to do it? The prospect is a succession of fruitless attempts at Civil Government till a General rules by military force. Russell says it is fit and becoming that Queen Victoria should inhabit Holyrood Palace. It will give great satisfaction throughout Scotland. Lord John Russell thanks Queen Victoria for her gracious letter. [The resignation of Lord John Russell occurred in February 1851. Lord Stanley (after Earl of Derby) was unable to form a Ministry, and Russell returned to office].
