TitleLetter from Lord Derby to Queen Victoria
Date20 April 1852
WriterDerby, Edward, 14th Earl of
AddresseeVictoria, Queen
DescriptionDerby enquired whether the Commons would be likely to grant a sum as special vote for widows and children of sufferers in the wreck (H.M.S. "Birkenhead"). Disraeli in favour of it in aid of a public subscription. Derby would like to see Queen Victoria on the question. It would be popular that Her Majesty should take the lead in the question, and recommend the Commons to vote in aid of public subscription, with Her Majesty's name at the head of the list. Derby has received a note from Disraeli stating that an Address was moved in the Commons, relative to the appointment of Reverend Mr Bennett to Frome Vicarage. It was rejected. Derby says that the conduct of Mr Bennett was to be strongly condemned. Derby thinks the debate a subject for congratulation, since it elicited a strong anti-Puseyite demonstration in the Commons.
