Proposed appointment of Mr Matthew T. Baines as Secretary of State for the Home Office, in the event of Sir George Grey's going to the Colonial Office. The latter's reluctance to become Secretary of State for the Colonies. His decision deferred. Lord Stanley's and Lord Derby's gratification at its offer to Lord Stanley, though refused by him. Lord Palmerston to Queen Victoria on the question of Major General Patrick Grant's appointment to Command in Madras, India. Cabinet decision. Lord Hardinge's attitude. Lord Palmerston's undertaking. Lord Palmerston on Cabinet annoyance at a telegram from Sir J. Simpson anticipating disaster to an expedition to Kaffa and Arabat (Crimean War). Reply sent.
