Letter from Lord Palmerston to Queen Victoria

15 March 1855

Palmerston, Henry, 3rd Viscount
Addressee
Victoria, Queen
Description
Lord Shaftesbury's difficulty in accepting office, owing to his former votes on the subject of Maynooth. Mr Wilson's decision not to risk a by-election. Mr Frederick Peel therefore recommended as Vice-President of the Board of Trade and Sir Robert Peel as Under Secretary for the War Office. Lord Palmerston's reply to Queen Victoria, regarding evidence given before the Roebuck Committee. (It seems probable that Her Majesty was referring to this, though the letter is vague.) Lord Palmerston on the question of interfering with the powers of Committees (? Roebuck in this case) with regard to calling witnesses. Sir John Herschel's resignation of his appointment as Master of the Mint. Captain H.D. Harness R.E. (after Sir) proposed by Lord Palmerston as his successor.
