Description
Dr Blomfield's desire to resign as Bishop of London (St Paul's). Necessity for an Act of Parliament to effect this and to provide a pension. The suggestion for the division of the diocese (into London and Westminster) and the grounds for recommending it. Position as to Southwark. Question of salary. Dr Maltby's desire to resign as Bishop of Durham. Necessity for an Act of Parliament for his resignation and provision of a pension. The choice of a Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol. No offer made to Mr R.C. Trench. Reverend Charles Baring proposed. His qualifications. Deputation to Lord Palmerston to urge the separation of the two dioceses (united in 1836). Lord Palmerston's view. Suggested transfer of residence from Stapleton (near Bristol) to Gloucester.
