Queen Victoria on the resignation of Lord Spencer (Frederick, 4th Earl Spencer) as Her Majesty's Lord Steward. The difficulty of finding a successor. List of suitable peers sent (not included). Readiness of many gentlemen to waive their political objections on knowing of her personal wish for them to take office. Suggestion as to using this argument. Lord St Germans (E.G.E., 3rd Earl St Germans) preferred by Her Majesty, as the fittest for appointment.
