Date13 August 1846
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria perceives from the newspapers that the Deodands Abolition Bill will affect the Crown. The account states that the Queen's consent to the Bill has been obtained, but Queen Victoria had no recollection of such a Bill and wished to know something about it from Lord John Russell. The Queen wished to know under which circumstances the Great Seal of Scotland was taken from Lord Stair in 1841, before she would consent to it being taken away from the Duke of Argyll. Queen Victoria found the news of the potato crop to be both very distressing and alarming, and asks about the crop in England and Scotland and the harvest in general. The Queen asked if Russell had formed any opinion about the visit to Ireland that year. Queen Victoria regretted to hear that William, 2nd Earl of Listowel, had lost his elected seat at St. Albans.
