Description | Queen Victoria has perused Lord Cottenham's [Charles Pepys, 1st Earl of Cottenham, Lord High Chancellor] letter. She believes that hardly any of the Hanoverian Jewels of King George II now exist or can be identified among the present Crown Jewels. The proposal for a valuation would therefore be difficult to obtain, although a valuation might be valuable when the time came for compensation for the King of Hanover [Ernest Augustus ]. Queen Victoria does not wish to consider the question of compensation other than to say that she is not aware of any Civil List fund from which the proposed sum could be taken, except the ordinary Revenue of the Lord Chamberlain's Department, and that has until lately fallen short of the Department's expenditure. |
