Description
Queen Victoria has seen Lord Normanby [Ambassador at Paris] who is very anxious to promote a good understanding with France. The Queen approves of Lord John Russell taking the Great Seal of Scotland from the Duke of Argyll and giving it to Lord Stair. The Queen approves Mr. James Howard for the vacant post of Groom in Waiting, but says that Mr. Duff would be equally agreeable if Russell wishes it. The Queen expresses regret at hearing of the failure [of the Irish potato crop]. The Prohibitionists had declared the other day that one heard nothing about it now, after it had served Peel's purpose. Queen Victoria approves Russell's proposal that her visit to Ireland be postponed to another year.
