TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date20 November 1846
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionAs a mark of her approbation of his services, Queen Victoria approves the appointment of Sir George Arthur as a Privy Councillor. The Queen approves the appointment of Sir Thomas Esmonde and Mr. Tighe to the Irish Privy Council. Queen Victoria very reluctantly consents to the abolition of the Eton Montem. She disapproves of the bad system of abolishing all amusements, which will make people morose and will not check vice. The Queen regrets that so old a festival as Montem should be done away with, and fears that the boys' feelings have not been consulted at all. She also fears that her going to the boats will not please the boys as much as the Eton Montem.
