TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date24 March 1847
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionWhile Queen Victoria approves with pleasure the appointment of Lord Clarendon's brother [Hon. Henry Montagu Villiers] to a stall at St. Paul's, she calls Russell's attention to the mode of filling these Church sinecures. Ministers' proposals should be made to be of use to the Church and the country, and these places of emolument given to Churchmen distinguished for their scientific attainments who would otherwise not have the means to continue their researches. As an example of this kind of person, Prince Albert mentions Mr. [William] Cureton, who has just published the real Epistles of St. Ignatius, translated from the Syriac, and is involved in other such works.
