TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date20 May 1847
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria forwards to Lord John Russell two letters she has received from the King and Queen of Portugal, showing that the Junta have not only refused 'our' [England's?] terms, but have even refused an armistice. Hence the devastating war is continuing and the Portuguese Throne is in danger. The Queen writes of the importance of wasting no time in settling how to fulfil England's promise of assistance, as a few days' delay may have alarming consequences. There should be no delay in reaching an understanding with France, and the Queen suggests that instructions should be sent immediately to Sir Hamilton Seymour [Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Queen of Portugal], as she fears that the King and Queen of Portugal's position is in great danger.
