Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
28 August 1847
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria complains about the number of appointments being announced in the papers before she has given her consent to them. She heard from Lord Grey that Lord John Russell and the Duke of Wellington wished for Sir J. Macdonald and Lord Fitzroy Somerset to be given the Grand Cross of the Bath, and the next day saw this announced in the papers dated three days earlier. A similar thing happened with regard to the appointment of Admiral Hornby [?]. The Queen asks Russell to prevent this happening again: as well as being inappropriate, it might be very embarrassing if the Queen should happen not to approve the proposed appointment.
