Description | The highly important news from Lisbon has given great satisfaction. The Queen of Portugal is showing the world that it is not her fault that she cannot succeed in carrying out the Articles of the Protocol; but Britain must stand by her for the sake of its own honour, as it has pushed the Queen to this step which, as Sir Hamilton Seymour's despatches show, may produce alarming results, including by the Chartists. The Queen of Portugal's allies must not abandon her, and Queen Victoria regrets that the squadron has left before it was clear that Lisbon was safe. Queen Victoria thinks that she and Prince Albert must take some credit for what has happened in Lisbon, as their strongly-expressed letters helped to bring this about. She will soon write to Russell about Lord Minto's mission, which she considers a very grave matter. |
