Description | Queen Victoria says that it was decided, after much consideration, that Ibrahim Pasha should not have the Royal carriages. An alteration now would be very awkward and look like disapproval of former proceeding. The Queen approves of the pensions proposed by Russell, but she considers the one to Father Mathew to be questionable: she appreciates what Father Mathew has done by preaching Temperance, but this was done with the aid of a superstition, which the Crown can hardly support. The Queen has no objection to Lord Camoys as Lord in Waiting but fears that the admission of Roman Catholics to all offices may raise the cry of "No Popery". |
