TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date7 November 1847
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria has learnt of the death of the Archbishop of York [Hon. Edward Venables-Vernon-Harcourt] with much regret, having been very well acquainted with him. The nomination of a successor requires much care, and the Queen considers the Bishop of Durham [Edward Maltby] as very eligible. The death of the Archbishop of York has also led to a vacancy in the office of Lord High Almoner, which is in the Queen's gift; she has been thinking of the Bishop of Oxford [Samuel Wilberforce], and asks Lord John's opinion on this.
