TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date19 November 1847
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen is glad that the Speech [from the Throne at the Opening of Parliament] can announce that there has been no infringement of the Law with regard to the Bank. Of the passages relating to Ireland, the Queen prefers the one marked, as it leaves open to further consideration the adoption of coercive measures. Queen Victoria is struck by the scanty allusion to foreign politics, and wonders if Italy and Lord Minto's mission should be mentioned. She also wonders if it is right to refer to England's efforts alone with regard to Switzerland, without mentioning that the Five Powers are trying to come to an agreement with regard to that country. The Queen would like Lord John to come to Windsor so that she can answer him about the proposition relating to the Order of the Bath.
