TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date26 November 1847
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria gives her approval to Rev Mr. Gurney being appointed to the vacant living of Mary-le-Bone, and agrees that the Marquess of Normanby may receive the Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. The Queen thinks it very likely that France will be anxious to be on a more friendly footing with England than it has been for the past 14 months, and agrees that it would certainly be conducive to the interests of the country and to the maintenance of peace in Europe. This should therefore be met in the manner Russell recommends. The Queen asks if Russell has seen the letter from Mr. Prevost, Agent and Consul-General to the Swiss Confederation, to Lord Palmerston dated 15 November, in which he says he is authorised to declare that the Confederation would decidedly refuse foreign intervention. She is surprised it has never been referred to by Russell or Lord Palmerston in the recent conversations she has had with them, or mentioned in any of the recent diplomatic transactions.
