TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date13 September 1849
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
Description[Headed 'Private & confidential']
The Archbishop's prayer is just what the Queen expected: addressed to a God whose power cannot be resisted, and attributing the present visitation to His wrath and revengefulness for the country not having been thankful for having escaped the revolutions of last year. It should be addressed to the Heavenly Father, expressing confidence that, however severe the present trial may be, it must be decreed by wisdom and love. As the general spirit of the prayer is not in accordance with the Queen's sentiments, she has not marked any particular passages: but if Lord John can prevail on the Archbishop to exchange a little of the Israelite spirit for the more Christian, she thinks the prayer would be generally improved.
