TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date1 October 1849
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria is sorry to hear of the new complications in European affairs [regarding Turkey]. While she appreciates the difficulty of allowing the Porte's independence to be attacked, she expresses regret that the British Ambassador should have taken the lead in the controversy and taken so much responsibility upon himself in advising the course the Porte has taken. A European War may be the consequence, in which Britain may be engaged without option.
