TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date10 October 1849
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen rejoices to hear that the dispute between Russia, Austria and Turkey is likely to be amicably settled.
She and Prince Albert are in 'the deepest grief' at the unexpected death of George Anson. The Prince has been quite overwhelmed by it: as well as being an old and faithful servant, Anson was a real friend of the Prince, and had been with him ever since he came to Britain. Every event of his life in Britain, small or large, was connected with Anson. Anson ws so well in Scotland, and in such good spirits when the Queen and Prince parted from him in Derby, that they cannot realize the sad reality. They feel very much for Mrs Anson.
As Lord John expected, the Queen is detained at Osborne, but hopes to go to London on Friday for one night in order to visit Queen Adelaide at the Priory, and also on account of the recent melancholy event [Anson's death?]. Should the news from Windsor be better by that time, they will go there on Saturday; but if not, they will return to Osborne that day.
