Description | Queen Victoria rejoiced that everything went off so well yesterday [the State Opening of the Coal Exchange], but was very annoyed that chickenpox prevented her from being able to go. She has quite recovered, though is still much marked. She approves of the proposition regarding the National Thanksgiving and, if it is generally preferred, that it should be on a weekday. Regarding the Bishop of London's proposal, she thinks Lord John may have misunderstood him, as she presumes he meant that she should attend some place of public worship, not her domestic chapel, in order to join in the public demonstration. The Queen is quite ready to go with her Court to St. George's Chapel, but she would like it to take place on an earlier day than 27 November (although not the 21st as that is the Princess Royal's birthday), as she will probably be on the Isle of Wight by then. Lord Melville's letter comes ȧ propos, as what he suggests is what she and the Prince have wished ever since their last journey from Scotland. Holyrood is just the place to stop at. Lady Erroll's claim is somewhat embarrassing, but it would be well to make enquiries as to what her claims are to these apartments. They were granted to the late Lord Erroll, and it remains to be seen what claim the son can have on them. |
