TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date23 January 1848
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria regrets that the East India Company have preferred Lord Falkland to Sir Edmund Lyons [as Governor of Bombay], but hopes that Russell may soon find an opportunity of promoting Lyons. She asks if Russell has thought of a successor to Lord Falkland in the Household [as Captain of the Yeomen of the Guard]. The Queen feels that the Duke of Norfolk is quite the right person to have the Order of the Garter, and wishes Lord John to appoint him. Regarding the appointment of Lord Lieutenants of Counties, the Queen notes that it has always been thought better not to let the dignity pass from father to son; but doubtless there is a difficulty in finding anyone in Montgomeryshire with a better claim than the present Lord Powis, so she approves Russell's nomination. The Bishop of Manchester [James Prince Lee] might do homage on Thursday afternoon.
