Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
27 July 1848
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria acknowledges Lord John Russell's letters respecting Italy. The alterations in the draft meet many of the Queen's objections. While the French Republic cannot be safely trusted in this matter, she acknowledges the advantage of attempting to bind France to good conduct; but it must be done without the appearance of a league with them against a friendly Power [Austria] struggling to preserve a territory granted to it by a treaty to which England was party. The Queen approves the amended draft.
