Description | Queen Victoria sends Lord John some curious letters [not on file], which are the strongest support for the views she has often expressed with regard to the Italian Question. Mr Abercromby [British Minister at Turin] speaks of "the phantom of Italian nationality to which everything has been sacrificed". Now that the Milanese and Piedmontese are so furious against each other that Mr Abercromby doubts it would be possible to unite them, even if Austria were willing to abandon so large a prize, it would be almost ridiculous for England to attempt to force such an arrangement on Austria. In addition, Austria is now entirely master in its own territories and Charles Albert [King of Sardinia] is on the point of being dismissed by his own subjects. A new arrangement must evidently now be thought of, hopefully with as little delay as possible. |
