TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date29 January 1849
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen very much approves the last draft to Paris, referring to the plan of Austrian and French intervention, which, while warning against these plans has declared that Britain has no intention of getting involved in these matters. She regrets, however, that Lord Normanby is trying to arrange with the French Government a Sardinian intervention in the Papal States, which is neither consistent with the principles laid down in the draft to Normanby, nor will it make it easy for Austria to keep out of active measures with regard to Rome - quite the contrary.
Queen Victoria sanctions the removal of Sir Edmond Lyons [British Plenipotentiary at Athens] from Greece. She wishes Lord John Russell to see her letter to Lord Palmerston on these different appointments.
