TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date27 February 1849
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen has just seen a draft to Lord Normanby [British Ambassador to France] in answer to his despatch describing the consternation both he and the French Government feel at the news of the King of Sardinia having exchanged his peaceful Government for a War Ministry, and the desire of the French Govenrment to act in perfect accord with Britain. The Draft reciprocates this desire, but tries to lay the responsibility for King Charles Albert's new intentions of aggression upon the Austrian Government. The Queen recognizes in this the same partial spirit for the King and against Austria which has falsified Britain's position with regard to the Italian quarrel. As the new acts of the King of Sardinia may lead to fresh and serious difficulties in Europe, the Queen warns Lord John to keep a watchful eye on Britain's foreign relations in order to prevent any other gradual deviation from the justice and impartiality which befits the dignity of the British Government.
