Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
28 March 1849
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria notes that Lord John Russell agrees with her that it would be unjust and immoral to shield the King of Sardinia a second time by an offer of mediation, at the moment Austria should repel for the second time the King's unjustifiable attacks and be in a position to exact terms of peace. The Queen calls Lord John's attention to the terms of the draft that she sends, which seem to her to pave the way for that very interference which she condemned, drawing particular attention to the passage she has underlined. It was quite right to demand an assurance from Austria that it would not make any conquest, although Britain never asked for the same assurance from the King of Sardinia.
