Description | Queen Victoria does not object to the tenor of the draft which she encloses, which merely preaches moderation to Austria; but she is struck by the fact that England is again taking sides with Sardinia, avowedly at that country's request, while the accounts from Turin suggest nothing but movements for setting aside the armistice just concluded. It would be more useful for a word to be given to Sardinia to keep faith for once, and would be more appropriate as England is already beginning to admonish Austria, if England is to be impartial, for which the Queen presses. The great point to be gained now is a speedy conclusion of a peace. Will that be furthered by Sardinia being induced to look for changes in the terms brought about by reference to London, and from London to Vienna? |
