Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
10 April 1848
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria expresses her relief at the complete failure of the Chartist meeting and procession: she hoped and thought it would not come to anything serious, but in such sad and alarming times could not help feeling anxious. Doubtless the extensive preparations and the Government's determination to put them down were the principal reasons deterring the Chartists from proceeding with their meeting. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had thought of asking the Prince of Prussia to be Sponsor to their little girl [Princess Louise], but do not wish to do so without asking Lord John whether there would be any objections from a political point of view.
