Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
26 May 1849
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
In answer to Lord John's communication re India, Queen Victoria approves the annexation of the Punjab and is pleased that the Government concur in this view. The elevation of Lord Dalhousie to a Marquisate is well deserved, and probably the only thing that can be offered to him for his services; but in view of his want of fortune, the Queen wonders if it should be first ascertained if the increase of rank would be convenient to him. The Queen approves of the elevation of Lord Gough to the dignity of Viscount.
