| Description | The Queen has not yet seen the despatch which refers to M. de Tocqueville's intentions regarding the restoration of the Pope, but thinks that the draft to Lord Normanby [British Ambassador to France] is the first impediment thrown in the way of this and the evacuation of Rome by the French, both of which are of the greatest importance to the tranquility and peace of Europe. If, as a result of English advice, the French were to change their determination and the gravest consequences were to ensue, England would be responsible: but why should England take on such a responsibility which is in no way called for? |
