Description | Regarding Schleswig Holstein, Queen Victoria deals with Lord Bloomfield's (John Bloomfied, 2nd Baron Bloomfield, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia) despatches giving an account of the attitude of the Russian Cabinet towards the oppressive and provoking conduct of Denmark concerning this question. Queen Victoria left the matter alone thinking it would be of no avail in influencing Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston. Westmorland (John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia) made himself the complete advocate of Denmark and Palmerston approves his conduct. Yet there is confirmation of the cruelties practised on the Schleswigers; and this under our approval and advice. Where are the "interests of humanity" so ostentatiously put forward by Palmerston? |
