TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date11 July 1850
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionFollowing the death of Adolphus, Duke of Cambridge, Queen Victoria wishes to make a proposal to the Commons with respect to the position in which the Duchess (of Cambridge), Princess Mary and Prince George of Cambridge are left. The Duchess is left ill off, with only £6,000 a year. It is well not to ask for an increase of Dowry if it prevented a competent allowance for Prince George. Princess Mary ought to have £3,000, as was settled on Princess Augusta (of Cambridge). The precedent established in the case of the late Duke of Gloucester ought to make no difference. Prince George is the only remaining heir of King George III. What the Duke (of Cambridge) left, Queen Victoria does not know. Providence in expenditure has not been a fault in the Royal Family. Something should be done at once before kindly feeling for the Duke dies down.
