Description | Lord John Russell's remarks about the Duke (of Cambridge)'s annuity and the vacant regiment surprises Queen Victoria. The 2 questions have nothing to do with each other. The Queen will act with regard to the regiment as she has always done in regard to Army Patronage - on the advice of the Commander-in-Chief. She cannot admit any control of this patronage by the House of Commons. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington's proposals were to give the Coldstreams to Lord Anglesey (Henry Paget, 1st Marquess of Anglesey) and the Blues to the Duke of Cambridge, vacating the Lancers; and vice versa, the Coldstreams to the Duke , or to Lord Beresford (William Beresford, 1st Viscount Beresford). The Queen declines to enter into a bargain. |
