Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
8 December 1850
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
With regard to the Mission to Rome, Queen Victoria says that Lord John Russell must be a better judge of the effect of Shiel's presence in Rome than the Queen. It is against her notions of what is becoming to ask the Pope (Pius IX) for a favour at a moment when his name is being vilified in this country. It is an undignified course for the Government to pursue. Queen Victoria regrets the great abuse of the Roman Catholic religion which takes place at various meetings, - unchristian, unwise and should cease.
