Description | With regard to Schleswig-Holstein, Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston has not stated what passed between him and Queen Victoria. With respect to Westmorland (John Fane, 11th Earl of Westmorland, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Prussia)'s Mission to Dresden, Palmerston protested that we want information, and Queen Victoria stated that as her reason for wishing Cowley (Henry, Baron Cowley, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the German Confederation) to go. Palmerston said that would be a slap in Westmorland's face. Finally decided to "Wait and see". Considering the immense importance of this Confederation's results in Europe, Queen Victoria cannot understand Lord John Russell's indifference. But for what Cowley has sent, we are miserably short of information on German matters. Unpardonable to trust a man like Forbes (Hon. Henry Forbes, Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Kingdom of Saxony) or Westmorland giving us a true, fair and complete account of what will pass at Dresden. If the new Commission at Frankfort appointed by Prussia and Austria to settle the Schleswig-Holstein Question renders Cowley's absence from Frankfort impossible, then Mr. Ward at Leipsich [Leipzig] must go unofficially to Dreseden to report. His despatches show his cleverness, impartiality, and application. |
