TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date20 January 1851
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria writes that the Schleswig Holstein question has arrived at a new stage. We can only take one of two positions. Either we are no longer mediators and ought to et matters alone and allow Austria and Prussia to settle with Denmark: or we consider ourselves still as mediators; in which case we must persevere with impartiality. Colonel Hodges' despatches are violently anti-Danish and contain nothing but gossip and insinuations that are mischievous. They should not be made the basis of representations to Austria and Prussia. Nor can we demand an entire abandonment of Schleswig and disarming of Holstein, without making it contingent on Denmark's reduction of forces and a declaration of her future intentions.
