TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date5 March 1851
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria would give every facility for the selection of a good site for the (National) Gallery. The Queen would not therefore object to its being built on to Kensington Palace or anywhere in Kensington Gardens; but does not see why it should be placed exactly on the palace site, taking away from the Crown the last available set of apartments. The Queen is not disposed to trust to Parliament to give her an equivalent for these apartments. The surender is not likely to be thanked for, and then any demand of compensation would be met with abuse. As for economy, that would best be met by taking a site quite unencumbered. The Queen does not see how Ireland can be exempted form Papal Aggression.
