TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date13 March 1851
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionQueen Victoria sends to Lord John Russell a very confidential letter from her cousin the Queen of Portugal (Maria II). She has written to the King, (Ferdinand II of Portugal), saying that a quiet and conciliatory Minister should be appointed to Lisbon. Queen Victoria asks Russell that no harsh or arbitrary proceedings take place, and urging that his offer of arbitration be carried out concerning our claims, without delay. Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston's reputation is a great drawback. All countries distrust his intentions. Queen Victoria approves the names of the Commissioners of the National Gallery relative to a site on the condition that any site in Kemsington Gardens except the palace was open to their choice.
