Description | Queen Victoria says the cause of the Schleswig War was the attempt of Denmark to separate Schleswig from Holstein, to which it has been united for centuries, and incorporate it into Denmark. Germany, under the plea of resisting the violence, endeavoured to incorporate the Duchies into her territories. Now that through England's mediation everything had been settled to the advantage of Denmark, a Protocol has reignised the interest of the European Powers in the maintenance of the monarchy. The Duke has been reinstated by the very powers who defended the Duchies against him, and the Succession altered to suit the interests of Denmark, who is to be advised by a coup d'état to complete the separation of the two Duchies. Queen Victoria deprecates the responsibility of such advice resting with her Government. |
