Description | From Constantine Phipps, 1st Marquess of Normanby [Ambassador to Paris]'s despatch it appears that the French Government pretend to have received the entire aproval of the Coup d'Etat by the British Government, as conveyed by Henry Temple, 3rd Viscount Palmerston, to Count Alexandre Walewski. Queen Victoria cannot believe it, since approval is a complete contradiction to the line of strict neutrality and passiveness which the Queen desired, or which the Cabinet approved. What does Lord John Russell know of it? What of the world's conception of our honesty and dignity? |
