TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord Granville
Date11 June 1859
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeGranville, 2nd Earl
DescriptionOn the resignation of Lord Derby, Queen Victoria invites Lord Granville to form a Government, having selected him as leader of the Liberal party in the House of Lords. She feels it is very important that Lord John Russell and Lord Palmerston should provide their services to Crown and Country in these anxious circumstances, and thought they might do so acting under a third person. As they both served her long and faithfully, the Queen is relieved not to have to choose between them, and hopes they will feel no difficulty in co-operating with someone in whom they have both previously placed confidence.
