Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
6 July 1859
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
Queen Victoria was sorry to see from Lord Cowley's despatch that the French Government are beginning to talk of compensation and annexation. She thinks Lord John's draft to Lord Cowley is very good: but as the only objection stated in it to the taking of Savoy from Sardinia is that this might create suspicion regarding the Emperor's further intentions, the Queen fears that, unless a sentence is added giving or reserving an opinion of this act, Britain may be supposed to have given tacit consent to it. She requests copies of these drafts and despatches.
