TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date17 July 1859
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen will receive the Swedish Minister as soon as he arrives, and will also receive Sir J. Bowring.
The sudden death of the young Queen of Portugal is shocking and very distressing: 'If ever there was an Angel on Earth - she was one! Adored by all!' . She brought cheer and brightness to the young King and his home. Being so instrumental in bringing this marriage about, and so thankful to see its happiness, Lord John will understand the Queen and Prince Albert's distress. It is dreadful for her poor parents, who were prevented from visiting their daughter on account of Prince Hohenzollern's public duties in Prussia. It is one of the most melancholy events one can imagine
