Title
Letter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date
9 January 1860
Writer
Victoria, Queen
Addressee
Russell, John, Lord
Description
The Queen is glad to hear that Count Persigny gives a more cheering account of affairs. The wisest course would be for France and Austria to stop interfering in Italian affairs; but the Queen cannot see why this would require an agreement between France and Britain, which latter should not interfere at all. It is worth remembering that, while Austria is an Italian power on account of Venetia and France is not, Austria now has no troops in any part of Italy except its own, while France still occupies Rome and part of Lombardy. French interference is therefore the only one existing.
