TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date11 January 1860
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionThe Queen has received Lord John's letter, written after yesterday evening's Cabinet, and was relieved to learn of the proposal to ask France and Austria not to interfere in Italy, replacing the former proposal implying war on the part of Britain in defence of the provisional Governments of central Italy. However, this new proposal is only partial and incomplete if Sardinia is not also asked to abstain from interference. Austria has reversionary rights in Tuscany and Modena, while Sardinia has no rights at all, if a desire for acquisition is not considered. Austria will probably say it has no intention of interfering if Sardinia does not, but it would not allow Sardinia to possess its inheritance under its very eyes. It is not correct to put France and Austria in the same position: Austria is an Italian power on account of Venetia, while France has no position in Italy.
