TitleLetter from Queen Victoria to Lord John Russell
Date1 February 1860
WriterVictoria, Queen
AddresseeRussell, John, Lord
DescriptionBefore signing the ratification of the Treaty of Commerce with France [the Anglo-French Commercial Treaty], the Queen asks whether she ought to do so before it has been sanctioned by Parliament. The Treaty mentions it being subject to approval by Parliament, so would it not affect the authority of the Crown if the Queen ratified it and Parliament disapproved of it?
